Protagonist Kara starts out with major problems: her father’s cancer and mounting medical bills; her caregiving responsibilities, and the loss of her job. The family’s poverty demands that she sell Quicksilver, her cherished violin and the only link with her beloved grandfather. At Yesterday’s Dreams, a pawnshop, this selfless act introduces Kara to her true legacy. Confused by the turn her life has taken and pursued by a power-hungry evil force in the form of Lucien Blank, Kara must place her trust in a mysterious woman, a living myth who would teach her who she really was. As tensions mount between good and evil, Yesterday’s Dreams becomes the location for a bloody battle. Will Kara muster the strength of her Celtic ancestors or will she crumble beneath the onslaught of unforgiving fate?

Danielle’s tale kept me reading, wondering if Kara would survive. Her vivid use of the senses results in rich and alluring imagery. All of her characters are three-dimensional, including secondary characters like the sprite and Pixie. Kara starts out weak but she toughens up through the story. I can’t give you details without spoiling the story. Maggie impressed me as a lone wolf but she becomes more of a “people” person toward the end.

This was my first time reading Irish mythology, and Danielle does a great job of merging Celtic lore into the urban setting of New York. I found the lore of the Sidhe fascinating. The urban setting made the story believable. The horror elements have a Stephen King feel that will appeal to his readers. Danielle gives you a realistic picture of a caregiver’s trials and responsibilities. Without an income, it’s either Kara’s home or the fiddle.

I strongly recommend this book and give it five stars.
